I just ordered the AquaTop CF-500UV. It comes with mechanical filtration but not the bio media. I'd love to just buy some pot scrubbies like I used in my old wet dry that I built but will they be as efficient in a canister since there will not be as many. Or would the bio balls / ceramic rings be the way to go in a canister?

i would go for sea chem matrix... awesome bio media

Pot scrubbers would work, but not as efficiently as ceramic rings (not as much surface area). Not crazy over using bio balls inside a canister. Why not use sponge? It is great for biological filtration.

Well this is what I'm looking at.. and forgive the ignorance but with the exception of a jebo piece of crap that broke in a week this is my first canister. It's going on a 50 breeder (48x18x13) until I upgrade that to a 75+. I currently have an AC110 on it, the AC110 has two bags of ceramic rings. I'm thinking of either removing the AC110 altogether and adding both bags of rings to the CF500 or leaving the AC110 and placing one of the bags in the CF500. The CF500 has 4 trays so I could pretty much use whatever. The only thing that it includes is the main filter block and some filter pads. So I'll need to pick whatever else up to add to it.

i always bought it in the 4L buckets... always good to have extra on hand..1 might be enough i dont remember what they call for in there recommendations..

I'm ordering 2L. I read in another post that you want 1L per 100g. It's going on a 50g tank but I plan on upgrading once I find a decent deal and another 1L is only $10 more.
