Hi Folks ,

Just wanted to know how you guys deal with heavy bio load in your aquarium ? If you use canister filter what are the contents and in ehat irder from bottom up and how do you reduce amonia and nitrate in over crowded aquariums ?

Thanks

My eheim 2217 has the "eheim mech" rings on the bottom, a pad, Eheim "Substrat" media, and then another pad. I used to run floss, but it wasn't worth the trouble. My Eheim 2262, I just have poret foam and pond matrix.

You shouldn't see any ammonia unless it's a spike after feeding in a VERY heavily stocked tank. Nitrates can only be reduced by water changes and plants. I think some of members in the UK have had success with some kinda nitrate filter/reactor they use because they have nitrates in their tap water.

Personally, I just do big water changes weekly to keep nitrates low. Or, you could do a fresh water drip.

Just bought some pond matrix yesterday. Looking forward to putting it in my sun sun canister today.

I used to use Matrix. Now I only use Poret foam. It filters much better.

What is it ? This poret foam ?
The US distributor is Swiss Tropicals. This foam won't deteriorate over time like other foam. Go to website and read about it.

Poret foam only in a canister filter? Bacteria colony lives in just poret foam? If I'd have known that....
