Canister filter for 40g breeder with sand?

I currently have two Penguin 350s on my 40g breeder tank, but my cichlid is getting to the size where she can spit sand high enough that it's caught in the intake.

Which canister filter would you recommend for this size tank that will be able to withstand a lot of sand? My budget is <$150, thanks!

I would go with either a XP2 or a fluval 305.

Keep the intake about 3 inchs from the bottom to the tank

try a sponge pre filter on the intake tube to stop sand
