I currently have a 55 gallon with a emperor 400 and the tank has been getting really cloudy as of late. I am not sure what happen but the tank used to be crystal clear.

Ive been looking at the Fluval FX5 but at 945gph it seems like it will be too much. Would ya recommend anything else for a 55 gallon w/ emperor 400.

There is only 1 flowerhorn in this tank.

right now im running to bio-wheel 200's on my 55

i will be switching to a canister sooner or later

but the two 200's seem to be working great

and i have 13 fish running around my tank

ones a 7inch plec

Could be a bacteria bloom... how long has the tank been running? ANything change lately besides the cloudiness? When was the last time you changed the filter media? I have the same setup with a 10" red devil (getting a bigger tank as soon as I move), and have no problems with clarity. I used to run two emp 400's tho and two 125gph powerheads with no prob. If your fish doesn't seem to be struggling with the current, you are fine.

Another HOB would work fine. You don't need an FX5, although it will clean your tank good. Try using some filter floss in the filter. If you do decide to get a canister, I think a eheim 2217 is the best choice. Rena xp3 or fluval 405 would also work good. I have a 404 on my 75, and it works fine.

I notice the cloudiness after my brother did a water change and replace the new filter catridges. I thought things would clear up but it only got worse. Not sure what cause this. My tanks have always been super crystal clear. Could it be the pellets? overfeeding?

Your brother may have thrown away a good portion of your biological filtration by replacing the filter cartridges. Now the new media has to colonize.

I would add an AC110, nice big sponge for mechanical filtration, just add a layer of floss over that and I think you will be set. Assuming you are not going through a mini cycle.
But if you want to go canister, and want something cheap look into the Rena Filstar filters, not the greatest on the market but work relatively well. I have been recently motivated to get some Eheim 2217, these filters are great, all around great filter, made by a reputably company.
