I've heard you can't use canister filters for saltwater because the salt will corrode the metal (unless you get a super fancy one like a fluval that is made with titanium alloy)

I want to set up a brackish 55 gallon and I'm wondering what to use for filtration. I will probably stick a sponge filter in there but is there a type of canister filter I could use? I'm hoping I don't have to do a back-hanging filter because I want to do a waterfall type thing.

I've never done a saltwater setup, but I almost did and have done some research. While sumps are a lot more popular in saltwater, I'm pretty sure I've read about plenty of people with canister filters in saltwater tank setups. I also have a marineland c220 canister filter, and its only made out of plastic where water gets to it. Where exactly is the metal inside the canister that your worried about? Most canister filters are made out of plastic, and I would think the inside impellor area would have as much metal as any other pump/filter you would encounter

I have a Marineland Magnum 350 on my brackish. Salinity is 1.008. The filter is pretty low tech as far as canisters go and it seems to be doing fine. By the way, the impeller shaft is stainless steel. Salt concentrations are actually very low in brackish tanks.
