Hello all, I am starting up a 40b and was going to use two 35 aquaclear hang on filters I already have, but it looks like one is broken. Any recommendations for a canister filter? I figure if I am buying something, I might as well do it right. I am trying to stay low budget (hence the reuse of old filters)

Thanks for you advice!

I have 2 Sunsun 302's on my 40b and I love them. More than the eheim classic that was on there before.

I paid like $45 each for them on amazon.

Awesome, thanks! You say you have two. Is this for high excess filtration? Or do you need two to keep clean water? It say you can go "up to 75g", but I have always preferred excess filtration, myself. But in this case, $90 on two filters is probably not in my budget. One would be though!

I run an Eheim 2217 on my 40 gal with great success and long service intervals.

I definitely do not need two. I just have two for the sake of redundancy. It makes everything easier with cleaning them. I can rotate which one I clean and not worry about killing off too much beneficial bacteria.

They do an excellent job of mech filtration for a canister, especially with filter floss in the bottom.

I run them on a planted tank and there's alot of debris to suck up. This is one of the main reasons I doubled up on filtration.

Paired with a hob filter you should be more than fine with one

I did a review a few months back.

I'm more than happy with mine. I don't think I'll ever buy another brand

I have an eheim 2076 on my 40b and a 2217 on my 36, either would be great with the 2217 being more economical.

Thank you for all of the advice! These filters are the real deal. I may have to stick with the cheaper Sunsun 302 for now. The college budget is tighter than I would like. I will keep these other filters in mind for an upgrade though.
