So every time I restart my canister filter after water changes OR CLEANING it, it spews this brown gunk. i have no idea what it is but it's like these brown flakes. Even after scrubbing it clean it spews this stuff. What is it? Does anybody know what I am talking about? I think it might be gunk in the tubbing. Is there anyway to clean this?

Canisters suck....AC 110....sooo awesome...but when i clean out my Xp3 it has a lot of crap the clear tubes are blackish green with it....its probably just that stuff falling off the tubes spewin out
yes its from your tubes. I found the best way to clean them is with a cloths dryer vent brush. its long and flexible. You just got to cut the bristles down so it can easily fit in and out of the tube.
My canister filter is the greatest and super reliable. I love it it's just that gunk. I had no idea about the gunk in the tubes but I had a hunch. Im actually a bit peeved at my ac 110 right now. It's been a huge pain in the butt lately. I have to but a new pump for it...ugh
I take my filter hoses outside and shoot water from my garden hose down them from both directions. I use one of those nozzles with different patterns and set it on the the most powerful setting.
My XP3's do it whenever I clean em. I usually just put a fine net at the nozzle before plugging it back in. It gets most of it.
Thanks for the comments guys. i am going to clean the tubes the next time I do maintenence. I also have a rena xp2. i've never heard someone not like canisters.
@zispidel-Im not looking for a whole new filter but I am a bit interested. Have you heard of tropical fish world in gaithesberg? I occasionally go up there when I can make the hour long trip. I might be interested in picking it up but not right at this second.

I don't clean mine. thats beneficial bacterial colonies growing in the tubes. just leave them. it won't hurt anything.
