Canister filter maintenance

Ok bare with me Ive never owned a canister filter and would like to know a few things. How often should i clean it and how do i take it apart without spraying water everywhere? And my last question, how do i get it primed again. Reason i ask is well, the box and instructions are all in german no joke. Unfortunately the only way i could figure out how to prime it was to suck on the line and hurry up and connect it to the canister,sadly things never work out the way they should and i had a mouth full of water and a wet floor.

PS. It might help if i give the make and model, its an Eheim 2233.

keep the outlet in the water and the inlet lower than the outlet and suck when the water runs put back in the tank and switch on power

hope this helps and the cleaning use tank water to clean i do mine about 6 months but its down to the fish you keep and dont do all the media at the same time

Howdy,

I have a 2211 on a lightly stocked tank. I clean that filter once a year. Other Eheims I clean every 9 months or so. Whenever the flow rate drops. You'll know when it's time.
