I learned that canister filters must be BELOW the tank in order for gravity(?) to pull up the water..
but why can the zoomed 501 canister filter be at level or almost above the tank?
My teacher has the filter on the same desk the tank is on..

What would happen if the 501 was below the tank?
Also what would happen if your canister filter(XP/EHEIM/MAGNUM) were at level or above tank water?

Differant type of pump...

The zoomed canister filter uses a pump to draw water from the tank and then pump it back into the tank. A normal aquarium canister filter uses gravity to siphon water from the tank and then a pump to return it to the tank.

If you put the 501 below the tank it would function the same as it would above and at the same level because the water is regulated by the pump.

If you put a regular canister filter, (fluval, rena, eheim, etc.) at the same level or above a tank, the siphon would not work and thus the whole canister wouldn't be able to get water from the tank...

Hope that explains it :D

Thanks guys, especially amesbien. you cleared it up.

And I heard that normal canisters don't work in tanks with low water level, but what about the 501? would the GP/H be the same in a different depth?

and can I lower the spray bars on the 501 and XP series? I don't want any splash and noise..want it real close to water level but is that possible?

sure...you can mount the spray bars any place you like in fact you can pick up an inlet/outlet pipe kit at either of the big two pet superstores that is compatable with most canisters and can be set up any way you want.

thanks.
Would they be in the filter section?
do any online places carry this kit?

what's it called? literaly, inlet/outlet pipe kit?
hey if I use them, will the GPH get reduced?

it wont effect your gph in the least....no I don't remember the name and yes they are available in the filter section....probubly available on line as well but I've never looked for them.

thanks will go check next week
