I was wondering if anybody experienced any difficulties when using a canister filter for their FW tank when the filter was previously used for a SW tank. I think a good cleaning of inside the canister, tubes, pads, and media should be sufficient enough to make it ready to use for a FW tank. Any inputs?

What are you thinking? Do you have any idea the horrors that await you with such an act? What you should do is send me the filter and then I can continue to use it on my saltwater tank and everything will be fine.:)

Or a good cleaning an a bunch of rinsing and I would think it should be fine.

Thanks for everyone's inputs.

I specifically want to hear from anybody who's experienced this before and had any problems.

you'll will be fine just with thorough rinsing. Saltwater bacteria/additives will not thrive in freshwater anyway. I received a SW tank with wet/dry filter. I rinsed out the sump and the main tank thoroughly, rinsed the bio balls/foam/pads, then started the cycling process for freshwater.

i've recently done this with a fluval 405, Since the canister was already dried out, all i did was scrub every part real well with hot water and a brush. I kind of just beat the hoses up against the wall and rinsed with hot water. Its been running on my tank for 2 weeks with no issues.

all I'd do is a quick rinse under fresh water, and she'd be rawring to go.
