Any Ideas as to what one is the best? Was looking at the Hagen Fluval FX5.

The Fluval FX5 is an impressive looking filter that perports to have 'smart technology' that primes the filter automatically and once every 24 hrs stops and purges trapped air in the system. Rated at maintaining up to 400 gallons of tank/pond but it will slow down once the media begins to fill up with detritus and bacteria.

IMO its a little pricey and as yet unproven. Another draw back is the ribbed hose and wonky fittings that they supply on all there current generation of filters. These hoses trap dirt and become constricted with colonies of slime forming bacteria, reducing their efficiency (although extra biofiltration?). The fittings are beyond the pail! (pardon the pun) .

My personal favourite cannister is the Rena Filstar XP3. I have two on the go at present and they are by far the lowest maintenance cans I've got.

I'll vouch for the FX5. It's got great flow, really low maintanence, self priming, and tons of meda capacity. If you really search, you can find them for $200. Trust me, you won't find a better filter for $200.

Never tryed 1 my self. but from what i heard its a excellent filter

As stated peviously, it depends on the size of your tank/ aquarium.
I myself use Hagen XP2's and XP3's canisters; aided by AC 110 and
Penguin 350B HOB power filters.:)

you mean rena's XP2 and 3... right?

Ive always heard ehiem were the best if you have the cash.
A friend with more cash and less tanks than me swears by them.
I have a magnum and a fluval and Im not impressed with either
