I am going to make a sump for my new tank build and I have a canister filter here also, and I was thinking about running the sump as a filter in the normal way, and using the canister filter to filter the sump only for a little extra filtration.

I hope that made sense :nilly:

Will this work?? and if so, are there any benifits??

So you want to put the canister on the sump? That will work, it's kind of pointless though. You can just fill the sump with more media, no need to have another pump running. Extra flow in the tank could be beneficial though.

Also most canisters (mine at least) are supposed to be placed below the water level, and you couldn't do that with the sump.

If anything, its just going to add some extra surface area for the growth of beneficial bacteria. You could always run your carbon in the canister too though. Its effectiveness really depends on where youre putting the intake for the canister in the sump. If the canister is pulling clean water from where the return pump is, its not as effective as if its pulling water from where the water enters the sump.

Not so much with a canister , however I'm a little wierd when it comes to sumps... I filter my sumps with internal filter, cleans up any fine deitrus bypass that gets past my pads...my sumps are clean plus small benefit to added water movement

So do I. I use the Tetra internal. Guess I'm a little weird too.

I have decided to just use the sump by itself (140gal should be good enough to filter a 280gal).

But I have another question. I want to just feed the sump from the tank using the 1" bulkhead already inplace in my tank. It is obviously much different from an overflow, but will it work??

Please check out the attached photo and let me know if it will work.

A 140 gallon sump is far more than you need.

i dont think youll get much flow rate threw a 1" bulkhead.

is the new tank glass or acrylic? if its acrylic ide ither drill extra overflows or make that one bigger to get a decent flowrate.

if not it will work but you would get a huge amount of water threw it.

The flow rate is one of the problems I was thinking I would have. The tank is a plywood tank that I have almost finished.
