Hey, I was wondering if a canister filter is sorta like a sump. Are they good systems? better then hang on the back systems like a marineland penquin?

Yes they are good... Different than a sump but the idea is somewhat the same... I run canisters, HOB, and sponge filters and out of those 3 my favorite setup is canisters with a sponge filter or two in the tank for the added benefits.

Now from what I read, canister filters can go months without maintence. I know maintence really depends on how many fish u have, how big they are, etc. For people who do have them, is it reasonable to say that there is less maintence and the tanks are cleaner, etc? Im really considering switching to a canister filter. Thanks guys.

I find they can go much longer than my HOB filters without reduced flow. If I don't clean my AC once a month, it slows to a trickle. I've never actually cleaned any of my canisters unless I was completely breaking down a tank...

I have the Nu-Clear type canister filters and I love them. As far as maintenance goes: that all depends on the fish poo :) Having a little fun but it's no joke. If you’re putting 100 gallons of water per hour through a filter it will need to be changed at some point. Doesn't matter if it's a sump or canister.
I went with the Nu-Clear because they are so large. I only clean them once every two months. My fish have really grown over this last summer so I'm going to start changing the filter cartridge every 6 weeks!
Pick out a canister filter that is easy to maintain #1. Eventually you will need to change out the filter, might as well be easy :)
