what are some cheap canister filters for my 55 i don't want to spend more then $100. but i want to have the maximum gph. can you give me some brand names or model types

I'd go with a Marineland Magnum HOT for a 55gal

Either that link above or the JEBO one is probably the best bang for the buck, but just remember how much the original cost was, cause it'll fail sooner than a more expensive filter...I do recall hearing about broken fittings, etc.

There are also used items that pop up on EBAY and Craigslist every so often, under $100, but in need of minor items, media or hoses, etc.

The HOT filters are OK, but not as a standalone, IMO, on a 55-the HOT 350 is over budget.

I have used FLUVAL for almost 20 years......I stand by the name...........As for a 55g filtration unit, I would go with a DIY wet/dry filter or two HOB(hang-on-back) filter unit...........The most reliable combo would be two AquaClear 70 filters...........As for a canister, try building a DIY wet/dry......Starting off small will lead to an owner's advatage when dealing with something bigger............I have built a DIY wet/dry for mty 125g.......Total cost, less then $60, as compared to a brand new one that costs between $200-300............

You could get a wet dry for cheap on craigslist probably.
