Canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A fluval fx5 or 6 would be overkill on a 40g. And would be good on the 75g.

I have an eheim 2213 on my 40g. Which is underpowered for that size tank. I'd reccomend a 2217. Luckily my lfs has such old stock its made in Germany. It's only rated at around 100gph but works nicely on my planted tank. Best part is it only uses 8 watts.

From my experience I liked the 04, and 05 series better than the 06 series fluvals. My 406 has lost some flow due to the impeller cover warping some, not a deal breaker but still an inconvenience.

Consider also using a large HOB filter in conjunction with the canister to help with mechanical filtration, oxygenation, and general flow. Thats what ive always done.

I went to using canister filters exclusively for a while because I thought they were so much cooler than everything else. Im coming back to HOB filters more these days, easy maintenance less plumbing, inexpensive, high flow. When youve got fish that produce lots of mechanical waste cleaning multiple canisters on multiple tanks can be a drag. Im more likely to actually stay on top of things if its easier.

Just food for thought.

I would run two 2217 on your 75, or two 2215 will do.

My preference would be ac110 and 2217

I recommend this: http://www.aquatraders.com/Aquarium-Canister-Filter-Odyssea-CFS-500-p/42044.htm

I have this on my 75 and a larger one on my 180gal. It utilizes the FX design but at a fraction of the cost. Only modification this filter needs is replacement of 4 orings for the input/output connector, to make disconnection/connection of the hoses much easier. You can also use this for the 40 since the flow rate is adjustable.

If you decide to go with this canister, pm me and I'll let you know the exact size of the orings you'll need. Aloha

I have an old Rena XP4 (API Filstar now)..................nice price point, very powerful, quiet, versatile (can hold TONS of media)...have 1 one my 125GL & it runs like a champ.

Eheim are VERY expensive, & they are no longer made in Germany....Made In China now, I believe.......not sure how they justify that high price anymore....flow rate not very powerful, makes a good biological filter, not so much for mechanical. IMO, I wouldn't pay a high price for a filter that's Made In China. If I wanted that, I would get a SunSun piece of junk for far less money.

If you have a huge aquarium, 180GL+, get a Fluval FX6. VERY powerful, well worth the money.

I looked at an Eheim 2262 I just got last year. Made in Germany. I don't know where you gout your information from. I will never buy another brand again.

I have 2 2217's and 2215. The 2215 is more than 10 years old and still runs like new, never replaced a part on any of them. I swear by eheims. I've also had 2 rena xp3s and they worked great as well.

Lots of people swear by fluval but im yet to try them as theres been no need for an upgrade.

Personally think you should go 2215/7 and hob for the mechanical filtration on the 40. The 75 why not try a fluval fx5/6? Or like mentioned go the cheaper way and get an oddysea(sp).

I didn't mean to put a fx6 on a 75 or 40g was just testifying that they are good. It's overkill for that, use a smaller Filter if your choice but I do like the fluvals
