Canister filters???
How they work, water is siphoned down into the bottom of the filter then goes through the media and is pumped back onto the tank. So your media should go, (bottom to top) sponge, biological, then finally a fine mechanical like wool to keep the water crystal clear.
Here's a curly one, just cleaned out my filter and found old Java moss all through the biological media meaning the moss somehow made it past the sponges or there is some black magic going on inside that filter.

Which canister? Some are bottom to top, some go down through media in the sides and then come back up bottom to top and some have other configurations.

In the big open canisters you need to be careful how you put your media in if you care about avoiding bypass.

It's an Eheim 2028 I brought it second hand and trusted online opinions on how the media was to go in it. Turns out I should have got the correct instructions from Eheim because I had it the opposite way.

Eheim 2028 do go bottom to top. I had many of them years ago. From the bottom up it went ehfi-mech(mechanical rings), coarse sponge, ehfi-substrat(bio media), fine filtration pad, green plastic screen.

The water flows down the circular opening in all the media baskets and sponges and then back up through all the media from bottom to top.

Could have but in this case it was my Geos that have been destroying all of my moss tearing large lumps off the main plant.

Am I the only one that just stuffs their canisters with as much filter floss as possible and a sock bag of bio media? It's so cheap if you buy it in the huge bag. Seems to work fine for me.

I skip the filter floss. It clogs too easily, forcing me to open up the canisters way too soon. I just have coarse sponge on the very bottom, and maybe coarse sponge on the very top, depends on the canister.
