I was considering getting one of the Eheim (classic) canisters for my 55 g. I visited their website and saw a diagram on how to place the canister intake and output tubing in the tank. Does the tubing have to be set up like this? I would imagine it would be more effective with the intake on one side of the tank and the output on the other. I can see how their setup could be beneficial, creating a type of eddy current. Has anyone ever tried placing the tubing otherwise?

It would be more effective spread out. I'd move them as far apart as possible and if you can direct flow I would also do that. Avoids dead spots makes for a healthier tank.

Having both input and output on one end can work pretty well. When using a single large output stream instead of a spray bar, there's a big current across the top, hits the other side and comes back across the bottom towards the intake.
