I have a Fluval FX5 that I'm using on my 125g Brackish tank and I know it's a great mechanical filter but not the best bio filter out there. I have always wanted to do a W/D but do to the fact that my tank is the centerpiece of the living room it HAS to be quite and look good so no huge amounts of PVC hanging off of it and no overflow. I was curious if I could set up one of those huge rubbermaid bins full of bioballs / scrubbies and have the FX5 flow into that and then have the waer pumped back up into the tank? It seems like it would work and you would have a good mechanical and bio filter that was quiet. Thanks and if anyone has a better idea for a near silent good filtration system for me I'd appreciate the ideas.

Going to be tough matching the pumps...either your sump will overflow or your sump pump will run dry and burn out.

Best bet is probably some sort of trickle filter where your fx5 output runs into a bucket of biomedia and then into the tank by gravity. Problem there is that would be difficult to hide with what sounds like it's to be a "show" tank.

Yeah it's going to be a show tank and I figured the problem would be getting the pumps to match flow rates. I guess I'll pack the FX5 full of as much scrubbies as I can and see how it does.

Get another one or two FX5 and make one mechanical and two biological or put a sump the length of the tank under the canopy to gravity feed back into the tank.

Eheim make a wet/dry canister so it can be done.
Look up EHEIM Professionel Wet/Dry Filter 2227, 2229

Never seen those before they look nice but they sure are pricey. Anyone know how good they work?
