canister or power filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the canister filter looks like the ones they have forsale here in my lfs. I think the brand is SUNSUN or something like that. Its china's version of ehiems I think. I was considering buying one because the shop owner was selling one that is 2000L/hr for $80 and when I asked him what about warranty he said he will cover me for 3yrs. I dont think the ebay seller does that.

I dont know about the quality, durability or the performance of those things being that they are a china brand and made in china. Hopefully someone has used one of those will give some feedback on those canisters. goodluck

i have a 75 uk gallon tank and wondering about two things
1. should i get 2 power filters like one of these
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Internal-Pow...ryZ20754QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or a canister like this one
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI...item=150241755820&_trksid=p3984.cWAT.m240.lVI

2. what do you guys think i should stock it with

any suggestions are welcome for the filters or stocking

i was thinking of doing this in my new 75g when i get it, i posted it here, but was told not to skimp on fltration. which is fair enough. but, i dont see why it couldnt work.

if 1 internal has a turnover of 1000 lph, it will turn over the tank 3.3 times per hour. so two 1000 lph filters should combine to make 2000 lph, which would be a 6.6 turnovers per hour.

it would also cost effective (if like me) you already have one filter already. i think its a safer way to filter your tank, as if your single big canister filter dies, you have no filtration, with two internals you have some filtration if one goes. you could run two big filters but that gets expensive.

am i living in a dilusional dreamworld is this over complicating things, or is this even possible?

If I were you Id look for either an Eheim canister, or go with two HOB filters and get either two emperor 400's or two ac 110's. Either way, Id ditch the carbon they each come with - its unnecessary and a waste of space that you could use for additional biomedia. I have a 72 bow, and I filter it with two emperor 400's, but instead of carbon, they are filled with matrix rocks and polyfilter. The polyfilter is awesome for mechanical filtration, and the four bio-wheels and the matrix rocks (about 4 liters) are more than enough for anything youd put in your tank.

I'd go with a mix of both. AC110's are very good for mechanical filtration from their high flow, decent amount of bio filtration from the large sponge and nice surface agitation. Then a good canister that's prefiltered and loaded for max biological filtration.

I've used a Eheim clone in the past. They are better built than I expected, but they had so much water bypass that I don't think I'd trust them to do the job on their own.

I have 2 of these. Mine have the UV sterilizers which I don't use. They are pretty damn great filters. I've used just about every brand, and these have got to match even the best I've seen from the big brands. They are durable, solid, seal nicely, pump an amazing volume, and come with 4 baskets & bio ball media. I would recommend them to anyone.

I have an xp3 and the emp400 on my 75.

Definately go with multiple filters when youhave the option. Id even go so far as to say 2 mediocre filters are better than one great one - just incase one breaks down. Then again I over filter. On my 60 gal. I have a XP1, an XP3 and a XP4 and a whisper 60 HOB. That tank is full og big goldfish and some other fish though, Im kinda overstocked until I move and they go into my 120 thats in storage. When they go in the 120 I plan on using the 60 for a wet/dry.
You cant over filter, just dont get too much current.
