would a canister or a wet dry be better for a 300 gallon ? it seems that I would have to use two canisters on it and the wet dry just have to put a higher flowing pump in.

Buy "wet dry" you mean sump I assume...
A sump.is going to give you way more versatility and future expansion potential. A properly set up sump will allow more bio capacity then any canister ever could...unless you went with say, an Eheim 2250 or 2260....huge bio capacities. ...relatively low flow...fixed flow rather.
The sump/wet dry can tend to be a louder setup...especially comparing it to an Eheim.
The debate/comparison can go on for infinity....

I will go with a sump with 2 pumps for redundancy. To add to the previous post, sumps are easier to maintain. Easier to maintain also means water quality will be better.

My only reservation with wet/dry set-ups is that if you lose power or the pump break down, you have to put a lot of effort in keeping the BB(on the dry side) alive because you can't let the media go dry. Of course you don't have to go the wet/dry route just because you're using a sump sytem.

Very well said. My sump is actually a combo trickle and submerged media. Advantages outweigh the disadvantages in my humble opinion.
