How should I position my canister filter inlet/outlet?

i think it just depends on what ur looking for...i have my mag 350 on the right side of my 120 a fluval 405 in the middle and a fluval 405 on the other side....have some amazon fish kinda creates a river ecosystem for them

Only problem with this is that the heater is too far from the intake and outlet. Placing the heater near the intake and outlet allow the water flow to distribute the heated water. If it was up to me I would put the spray on the opposite end to evenly distribute the water.

Heater positioning is a nonissue. There'd be plenty of flow around it wherever I put it. I did move the spray bar to the other end per your suggestion, but it was already pushing water across the tank.
I'm more worried about pushing debris into the filters. Cleaning the sand in this tank is going to be a chore.

Completely unrelated but what type of sand is that?
