I'm considering a 90Gallon aquarium placed in my bedroom.

Any suggestions on which canister filter would be good for that setup?

I have very little experience with canisters and the amount of sound they produce. All I know is that HOB (the Penguin 200) I currently have is a bit too noisy.

I'm currently considering a Eheim 2217, or fluval 404 or 405 (maybe I should look into an eheim pro or a fluval fx5??). Or how about a Rena xp2/xp3?

I really hope someone with experience with those filters can help me out.

I have an xp3 on my 65...I wouldn't want it to be the only filter on a 90g tank. I definitely like the filter, but with slight over-stocking (see my sig) my water stays a bit cloudy.

Soon I'll be cutting the stock in half & eventually I'd like to add a magnum HOT250 just for extra measure.

Depending on what you're putting in the tank, I think you'd be fine with an xp3 + something like an ac110 or a magnum hot. Or even a pair of xp3's.

I don't have a whole lot of experience, but thats what I figure anyways.

I have mine sitting in a stand behind closed doors, from there, absolutely silent. My spraybar is submerged so there's no noise there (and its a great indicator when its time to refill from evap if it happens faster than my WC schedule;))

Edit: My 20 & 65 are both in the living room where we spend most of our time at home (tv is there as well;) and it doesn't bother us at all. Sitting on the couch about 10 feet away I could close my eyes and forget the tanks are even there. My airpumps make more noise from their vibrations against the wood than the xp3 does.

I like the combo of an AquaClear 110 and a Rena XP3 canister. I ran this on a heavily stock 90g for several years. worked well. the AC is rinsed weekly for great mechanical filtration while the rena is cleaned less often.

Dedicating a mech and bio filter is the way to go
if you pull out the polishing pad on the XP3
it will maintain enough flow to work well with the AQ

Renas XP series: beautiful design, quiet, easy to maintain, affordable
can't say enough

^ my thoughts exactly. I eventually want to put a magnum hot250 on my 65, run the xp3 100% bio and let the magnum do the mech; basically want the same setup on my new 55 as well. The 20 I'll stick with just one filter though;)
