Is a large canister better than 2 large power filters? I have 2 Penguin 350 on a 55g. Would replacing the power filters w/ an XP3 be a better option?

Depeding on how old your XP3s are, they will eventually leak and you will have to repair them if you can. I have two XP3s that leaked. I use Aquaclear HOBs and they never caused any problems.

on that size tank the pens will be fine ,maybe add bio media to 1of them

Fluval has a new line of HOBs that claim loads of bio. I love my emperor 400 though. I had one on my 55 with a 20in clown knife and lots a phew other friends and it did great. I often thought of adding a second but never really needed it. Bio-wheels are great!!

Depends on what your stock is. I prefer Canisters over HOBs, but HOBs are a lot easier to clean. A Canister holds more media and doesn't need as much maintenance.

I usually use AC110's but I'm trying a Rena XP3 on my 75 because it holds a ton more biomedia. Should work equally as well, if not better.

I had 2 Emperor 400's on my 55G and it was perfect. I would stick with the 2 HOB's that you have.

Always loved canisters, but the power filters you have now should be good for your tank. If you really want you could go XP3.
