I've been told that canister filters suffer from not puting oxygen in the water for the fish like a HOB would. Is this true. If so do you normally use a bubbler if your only using a canister filter?

True, canister filter is a closed system and won't add oxygen to flow through water, and may even deplete oxygen if it is dirty. However, the return flow will still add oxygen to the tank water by agitating the breaking the surface.

just another reason why tank should have a combo of a Hob and a canister. :)

If tank water level is too high then the cascading effect from the hob isn't as effective. So, ultimately, it comes down to proper equipment set up and not the actual filter type

I have a 2 canisters on mine. None of them are setup for agitation. One of the returns is aimed right at the heaters. I have 2 Marineland Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads right next to each other. One is blowing straight out and injecting air. The other one is aimed upwards to create surface agitation. Hope this helps.
