Did some rearranging in my tank. A couple hrs later noticed I was missing one of my 4-5" elongatus shovelnose catfish. I searched everywhere for it then I noticed my largest 10" shovelnose was a lil fatter than normal. It's not the fact that it ate my other catfish it's the fact that I just added 2 doz feeder goldfish into the tank and it still ate it own kind that been in the tank for months. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cause i still have another 6" elongatus shovelnose in the tank. Thanx.

The rule is: if a fish can fit into a predator's mouth (girth-wise, not necessarily even length-wise), it's a risk that may be realised either sooner or later. These are opportunistic, non-discriminating predators.

You are the first person I come across here that speaks of Sorubim elongatus right off the bat. Most people appear to not pay attention that there are 5 known species in the Sorubim genus and that IDs are not always easy. To them, they are all S. lima :) I do wonder how you know you got elongatus and not lima. They are very hard to tell apart for a layman, e.g., see page 3 in this recent thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?515615-Catfish-for-a-225-Gallon/page3. Have you simply bought them with such label?

No they where labeled sorubim limas when I bought them but after having my largest one for about 2 1/2 yrs and it stopped growing at 10-12" over a yr ago plus a buddy of mine has a s.lima and there are distinct differences in mine and his such as color, spotting, barbel and eye placement and of course size.

Are you able and willing to showcase the differences you are talking about with good photographs of the two fish?

I fully realize it's a lot to ask of someone, who may not necessarily have an interest in doing this, so "no" is a fine answer :)
