Is there something better than activated carbon that I can put in my cannister filter?

:feedback:

Pot scrubbers, lava rock, bio-max, substrat, substrat pro, cell-pore. All of these are great bio medias. I would only use carbon for removing meds from your tanks.

thanks! i was hoping those things would work ok in there.

which one would be the best for building up bacteria quickly? my water params are going nuts due to lack of bacteria

Use the scrubbies with a prefilter on top and some bacteria in a bottle, fill with used tank water and let stand for 30-60 minutes then fire it up. Tank may cloud a little depending on the chemistry of the tank It may start a mini-cycle. Keep an eye on the tank chemistry.

I wouldnt even use activated carbon for inside your cannister, unless you like to take it apart and replace it often. I would put the classic media in there, like ceramic rings, Ehfisubstrat, bio glass, biostars. etc.
