I want to make a simple canopy, just some ply over a spruce frame. What can I paint it with to waterproof it that wont leach chemicals back into the tank with the condensate? Should I just use some edible oil?
That's a creative idea, but no. Oil actually evaporates (much slower than water) and will be gone in no time. Use an oil based exterior paint; shoot for high gloss if you can find it. High gloss has a denser surface.
I thought rubber based exterior paint would be the best thing out there but it seems really porous in places. It mildews easily and I have large fungal growths where the water has penetrated. I used two thick coats on top of a coat of primer. In other words, don't waste time over rubber based paint.
