Anyone ever devise a solution to hold open the canopy top for servicing? I know I could just make a prop but that looks tacky. I toyed with the idea of using an electric actuator to lift the top up but when I installed it it decided to rip the hinges off lol. So now I'm going in the direction of gas shocks much like the ones used to hold the hood up on a car. Anyone done something like this and do you have pictures?

We used to use something like these for canopy lids on the stands my family built.

I would just buy the locking hinge mechanisms design for just such the purpose. You can find them at any hardware store for a few dollars. Generally located in the cabinet area.

Its a 125, old tank I guess you could say. Solid wood hinged canopy top 6' long. It's pretty heavy. Right now i'm propping it open with a 1x4, it's pretty hokey.

Iv'e considered those myself and it looks like I may have to when I finish my tank. You have to get the one's with the right force. Some of the automotive one's may have too much force because they have to hold up a large metal hood. especially the one's for older cars.

You may want to check here to get an idea of what you may need.

Or, like kallmond said just get a set at the auto parts store and get them for a real small car. Try them out and see what happens. Good luck
