Two questions here..

First, those who are using a canopy, do you still use glass covers? Are they needed if you have a canopy?

Second, Which lighting should I buy from Lowes or Home Depot for my 120gal 4x2x2. Would a twin tube style be enough or should I use 4 tubes?

with a canopy, glass is not needed since the lights sit inside a spot on the canopy, usually ontop of a glass strip.

however, I am not sure if canopies are available on a tank that big because plastic tends to warp. I don't think I have seen a canopy on a tank that is 2 feet wide, but I'm not sure.

personally, I prefer glass tops anyway.

as far as lighting goes, without plants, 2 bulbs should be okay.

if you want plants, you might want to add a third strip or even a second double strip.

that way, you get equal lighting coverage over the whole area of your tank.

Mudfrog, are you talking about a canopy or a hood? A canopy is often made out of wood and extends 5"-6" above the tank. A hood is a black plastic cover that is used instead of glass tops. Usually you would still use glass tops with a canopy to counter evaporation and fish that might jump out the back where the canopy is open.

I was talking about a canopy, and I was curious about evaporation and the lights getting splashed. I figured you would run glass tops but I was not sure. Does anyone even know where I can buy glass tops for my 48x24 tank?

personally I would still use the glass lids with a canopy so fish cant jump out... you should be able to get the glass tops are your LFS if they dont carry them I am sure they can get them...

Glasscages.com has them too if your LFS isn't close by.
