canopy plans for 240g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm going to be making a canopy for my tank that size in the next few months. Well, actually I'm doing the designing and my husband is doing the rest :-)
I think this canopy picture is one I found here on MFK. The guy had made it for his neighbor. There's got to be a way to push the front panel back along with the top to make water changes easier (mine's on an Oscar tank, lots of WC's). I like how this 1st one is made. The 1st 3 pics are the one canopy. The last pic is a different one. You could make 2 or 3 sections like the last picture and not have to make one huge 8' section.

Wow, I'm really impressed at what TwistedPenguin has found.
It gives me little ideas on how I should make mine.

Thanks for the reference.

It is fairly simple in operation, but something to think about is to be sure the fit is tight enough so that light isn't peeking out all over the place. When it can contain all the light except that which is beaming down into the tank, then is when you'll have a killer kanopy...:headbang2

As far as the light shining through-I had that problem on the last one we made (only our 2nd). What I did was put a strip of that rubber weatherstripping around the top edge of the canopy where the lid shuts on it. Blocked all the light out perfect. I hope you guys will show up when you get yours built.

thats what I was thinking, either some weather stripping or rubber.....

I basically copied my canopy from this guy’s website. http://www.fmueller.com/home/aquaristic/125g/technology/the-canopy/
He basically copied his from the Glass Cages Canopy he bought. I like this design for a few reasons. First it simple, there are no hinges to get broken. Second it was fairly easy to make for a guy with basically no woodworking skills. Third it’s easy to do most tank maintenance without taking the canopy off the tank you just take off the front doors.
