I like topless. ..like all good things in life...cars, bottles of beer, women....sorry, couldn't resist....
Seriously, an open top tank is way easier from many perspectives not the least is maintenance. But, open tops also means you have to get creative with lighting, fish jumping out (if you go truly topless) etc...
Personal choice really. Canopies tend to keep the heat in better....give the tank more of a finished furniture look.....

I like canopies on my tall large tanks, the 180, the 145, i do not like them on smaller tanks, like my 95g. just a FYI canopies come off for tank maintenance, no way to do it with them on.

I love everything about topless except for evrrything. Fish jumping out evaporation, airborne pollutants. ......
If You really want to go topless at least use eggcrate.

this is up to you? What you like? your tank, go with what you like.

If it doesn't build up too much heat or make maintenance a pita then keep it. Wooden canopies just looks nicer in a living space imo. Having said that, I actually don't use them due to the fact that I find they're a pita during maintenance.
