So am undecided on weather to get festae or jags as my next fish, I d buy them as juveniles so would get at least 6 to form a pair and move on the rest. Question is! what fish out of the 2 would you pick? Is there any Cons and pros of either one?

What size tank will they be housed in. The only concern is that male Festae can push out to 20inches, so your standard 18 in wide tank ain't the best choice if you are planning on keeping them for life.

For either one, a breeding pair needs a minimum of 6'x2'x2'. If you're looking to rehome the juveniles, it's best to find out which one you can unload quicker.

I agree with Jexnell, I have kept both, and its all about tank size, but the same size tank goes for either species. if your tank in under 100+ gallons, and less than 18" wide, neither will will work, because the tank will be inadequate.
If the tank is large enough, either or, are great cichlids to keep.
It will also be about water changes, as either grows, water changes will need to be increased.

I’m not gonna rag on tank size but focus more on your question. With either fish it would a cpl or years before you need a tank that large but you will- certainly when a pair forms.
I had a pair of festae, female 7”, male 10” she offed him. Both fish reached this size in about 2 yrs time. I love these fish and found mine to be less skittish than my jags.
I have an 11” gold morph male and 6” standard female jag. Once bonded in a 180 community, I moved them to a 4x2 where they peacefully cohabitate- occasionally i toss convict fry in there, as I have so many. But they do quite well together but I wouldn’t have moved them there prior to bonding.

my vote is for festae, less common, more colorful and IMO/E more interactive. Plus you may actually be able to move somefry.
