hey all. I have a 3.5 inch female flowerhorn that moves around a lot, eats normally, no signs of sickness at all. a few minutes ago, I saw a long thin white thing floating around the tank. idk what it is but its been there for awhile. my flowerhorn looks fine, all of its poop is solid and normal. I just couldn't figure out what the long stringy looking thing was. at first I freaked and thought it was hex, but since my flowerhorn hasn't really shown signs of being sick, im not sure of whether or not to be worried. can flowerhorns poop white if they are just stressed but not sick?

I wouldn't worry about it. It was probably something dirty like old food and even a tube of poop with the insides gone and just the outer white casing. Now if you the fish starts to have problems and there's a lot of white stringy things, then you have a big problem.

oh ok thanks man. yeah i tested it today i fed it a pellet it ate it the minute i dropped it in so its fine. i check on them like every hour. i got a new flowerhorn from julie btw. similar to yours i think, except without the big kok. it came in all gray and ugly looking, but then when i put it in the clean tank it grew cherry red. now all i gotta do is get the kok back cause it shrunk because of stress. go check out my new thread theres a pic of it. comment on it if u want, i really wanna know if its gonna have a chance of a big kok, or at least a decent sized one lol.

This stringy poop is a sign of constipation, usually. It happens with stress sometimes. If it keeps happening one can add Epson salts (magnesium sulfate) to the tank at 1tsp per 10 gallons to solve the issue. If it then persists then you know it is something else.

Its also a potential sign of internal parasites.

but i thought if a fish was sick with internal issues, wouldn't its behavior and colors change? wouldnt it kinda stop eating, and wouldnt it be floating somewhere and not moving as much, and wouldnt its colors kinda fade somewhat?

Don't worry about your FH. Sounds like she's fine. Sometimes when fasted, they will poop a white stringy looking poop that will make you think hex. I've had this happen plenty of times before. It's no big deal. If it was hex, she'd be losing color and she would stop eating. Remember, hex is a stringy white that has little balls making it look like a pearl necklace.
