Has anyone on here done this?

I am asking because I am going to give it a try and want to know if anyone has any pointers?

I have done paintings before, just not on a canvas. I have also done a lot of artwork so I don't feel it's a waste of my time... and would really like to give this a go. =] appreciate the input.

Do you know what medium you are going to use? Most people use oil on canvas. Also are you stretching your own canvas of buying a premade one? Made sure the canvas has been painted with gesso before you use it. Most premade canvases are already gessoed. Otherwise it's pretty easy to use. Have you used oil paint before?

Yes I planned to use oil paints, I have used them before, but it's been a while so I am sure I will need to brush up a bit before hand. I had planned to buy it premade, I will check into weather or not it was gessoed. There is an art supply store in orlando I plan to pick everything up from.

I haven't painted on a canvas in forever!!! I love it tho, I have only used acrylic on canvas tho never done an oil painting before!

I've used oil and acrylic on canvas but it's been a while. My one friend is big time into painting in oil and stretches his own canvas all the time.

i do canvas's with airbrush and larger ones with cans, done the one one or to marker canvas too... i duno these days price and ease of use its easier for me to use canvas boards than to stretch my own actual canvas...

Sounds like you are pretty set. For oil paint you'll need some oil specific brushes and a palette knife. I have found a sheet of glass with duct tape around the edges makes a GREAT palette. Very easy to clean. Um It's been a while since I have used oils so I can't remember all the chemicals needed besides paint thinner. Make sure to work in a well ventilated area.

I use acrylic w/ various gels to build them up and make peaks like oil paint. Trying to get my skill up in blending and stuff before trying oil. Even walmart sells stretched canvas now (well little ones 18x18" ish) and books of canvas paper to practice on. If you watch the craft store Micheal's they put their big ones on sale periodically or you can get their 20% off coupon online. When I draw out my prelimnary sketch I try have it really thorough on on paper first to look at then lightly draw it on the canvas. Art gum works pretty well to get any pencil off the canvas. What kind of subject matter do you like to paint?

Yeah, I figured as much. I'll talk to the people at the supply store also, as well as doing my own research.

My question to you guys now, is what would you think is better oils or acrylic? I have read pros and cons with both. I wont be starting this untill August, so I just want to know more before making a final decsion (yes I am doing my research also). I figure why not ask people who have used them.

I prefer oils. I find acrylic dries too fast and the colors aren't as rich IMO.
