Anyone here paint their own car? I need a good article on constructing a temporary paint booth. I know there are people who have done it but I don't know how to ventilate it. (Perhaps a box fan or two would work?)

I just used a garage, lined an area with plastic, put a fan in the garage window and wet the floor down.

Thanks I've heard wetting the floor is the old way and grounding the vehicle frame to something works better but yeah I've done the old way before.

I was thinking of building some sort of frame from pvc in the driveway with plastic covering it and a cutout for a fan with that taped down and everything pretty sealed(as much as possible). Think that's the way I saw a temp. one DIY spray booth made before but can't remember.

I really want to spray the car myself..

some 2x4s and plastic with a fan blowing out.were a good respirator.

but one of those like big tents they sell for cars like a temp garage, line the floor with like say a tarp and just get a box fan or 2 and a respirator

You will want to put a filter on the incoming air, and more for exhaust air.

Bugs can REALLY piss you off when they land in your wet paint.

BTW what kind of paint are you using? And what kind of respirator?

Aj, Don't know what kind of respirator but pops has one, also the hlvp and huge compressor. Paint is just gonna be basecoat/clearcoat. Doesn't have to be show perfect. Just want to be decent. And I used to help prep cars for paint.

Sounds like you have it under control. :)

You may want to use some motor guard gun filters to keep out oil and water.

Prep is very important, good to hear you have done it before.

What brand of paint are you planning on?

I found a place online that has Alsa brand for cheap(in a kit with reducer/clear/etc) in a color I can deal with but that may change. I may just head to the paint shop. But looking for a burnt orange color and wanted to mix metal flake in the clear. Can I do that with just one clear coat?

Car itself is straight forward just my old grand cherokee. Just doing outside, no jambs and all the emblems have been removed already.

I'll look into the gun filters but might have one already.

I would use two coats of clear, for UV protection, One coat may look good for a year, but it wash out the color (fade) or the clear could blister off in time.

I'm not familiar with Alsa , have you looked at matrix they have a decent priced line. Or western.

Metalflake added to the clear probably will lay flat and most likely not give you the effect you are looking for. A intermix clear or clear resin with flattening agent would be better. Talk to the place where you are getting the material they may know just what you need.

BTW it's a good idea to use product sold locally just in case you run short, you can still run to the shop and get more to finish the job.
