Is carbon bad for oscars?

it hasnt been provent that it's bad. I think it's fine if you change it enough.
It's just not needed, just an unnecessary additional cost.

Well I will have other cichlids.

It's still not necessary. The only reason you might need it is to remove tanins from the water, or to remove medications. If you keep up on changing it there shouldnt be any problem, but I still stick to the fact that it isnt necessary. If you want to pay for it, there isnt a thing wrong with it:)
I keep several kinds of cichlids and none of my tanks have carbon. I just use the additional space for more bio media:thumbsup:

 Agree w/ above. Unless you're trying to rid the tank of meds or tannin discoloration, you'll be fine w/out it. Once carbon becomes 'exhausted' (5/7 days) it actually begins to slowly leech the impurities back into the water!! Mfgrs. suggest replacing the carbon often cause it keeps you spending money w/ them. If you insist on using it & want it to be effective then you gotta keep buying more. I would save some carbon for emergencies & use the extra space for 'bio'. JMHO Good Luck

Carbon also gets rid of bad fishy smell

 milkman407: If you're a carbon fan I still luv ya & so do the carbon mfgrs.. The truth is you can get rid of the fishy smell w/out using carbon. Increased w/c combined w/ increased bio will have your tank 'cheery' in no time. Haven't used carbon except for med removal in years. No smell what so ever. The 'BOSS' (my better half) who doesn't share my passion for aquaria, would be the first one up in arms. She's a country girl & as she puts it "can smell a hummingbird fart a mile away". :) Good Luck

Thats what il do. Cause I got a huge container for my b-day. Il just put some pot scrubbers in there and use the carbon after meds.
