So is carbon that essential in a freshwater tank? I have an 8g biocube and it has a built-in filter and everything, and that filter pad only slows up the flow with very little cleaning. I have filter floss right after it that cleans the water nice, so is that pad really needed?

i don't have carbon in any of my tanks. take it out. I only ever use it if i want to remove a medicinal treatment from the tank

I do not use carbon except occassionally to remove meds, You can remove the pad and replace it with a trimmed piece of foam pad or EF sponge
