Carbon (Chemical) media necessary?

Just want to see the opinions of you guys. Do you think that chemical media is necessary? And why? I eliminated the carbons on my 125 gal. mixed african cichlids tank and everyone is happy! Actually I saw an improvement on their colors.

I only use carbon to get rid of medications. Otherwise yeah, I dont use it.

some people (like my father) are sold on the idea when something goes wrong in your tank your carbon is done and need to change the filter......... gah

i havent changed a cartiage pad in years just weekly cleanings in old tank water. (rant over)

I dont use carbon, havent in years. WORTHLESS IMO.....
