I was wondering earlier, does carbon filtration remove any liquid supplements I'm placing in the water for the reef? Like aquavitro fuel or any iodine supps. Thanks as always

It will. I never used carbon in my reef tank. If I needed to do any kind of chemical filtration I would use poly filter and then redose after or just phosban for phosphate. Really anything you need to remove is better done with a water change than a chemical type removal.

I do not believe it will take out the supplement. I have been using carbon on my reef aquarium all the time without ill effect.

Their are a lot of people that use carbon, but carbon will absorb organics as well as some trace elements. If you are doing proper water changes and maintenance you shouldn't have a problem either way. Your water changes would probably be enough to replace anything that the carbon would have absorbed.
I never used carbon because I have seen first hand the damage it caused to my Tangs. When I used carbon my tangs would start showing signs of HLLE. I would remove the carbon and in a week or two the HLLE would be clearing if not gone completely.

I use purigen, chemipure elite and blue in my reef tank. Chemipure contains carbon and I have never experienced even a slight case of HLLE in my purple tang, sailfin tang and foxface.

Im glad you are having good results with those products.
I have never used either one but a quick Google search says they contain some carbon mixed with resin. I was speaking to pure activated carbon and I stand by my comment and the results I have had. Carbon has been shown to cause HLLE.

There are other articles on the subject, I can post more links but I think you get the point.

I have to clarify my statement a little.
I dont believe activated carbon is the only cause of HLLE but I do believe it to be a cause. I have seen it several times in Tang species.
I quit using it a long time ago on all my tanks so I cant speak to freshwater causes I have no experience to draw on with freshwater species.

I guess it also depends on how much you use and the size of the system, I'm using a very little amount in a 125 gal reef. I believe chemipure blue is actually a di resin instead of a carbon and I only keep 1 or 2 bags of the chemipure elite in my sump. Really my go to is purigen. With species known to get HLLE I definitely wouldn't use carbon for instance like large cichlids or marine angels. I agree with your statements above. I have used carbon in my community planted tanks with no issue. I think diet is 95% the prevention of the disease and water quality but I suppose there's a slight chance fish are sensitive to carbon and fall victim to HLLE. With the article you cited there's no denying the fact when they pulled the carbon out the fish seemed to get better. I'm now considering pulling my chemipure elite out of my sump and leaving only purigen. Thanks for sharing the knowledge

If you are seeing good results with what you are using, dont change. Like I said this was with activated carbon, and I think its more then likely the fine dust that comes off that product no matter how much you rinse.
The bonding agents or resin used in the products you have are probably keeping the dust from being produced.

. Thanks for sharing the knowledge
No thanks required thats why we join this sight. To share what we all know, I have learned a lot just from reading and having an open mind.
