Carbon in tanks?

What exactly does the carbon do for in the tank? I bought a container of Aqua tech activated carbon, put some in each of my filter media containers rinsed and put it in the filter.

Takes out chemicals, meds, discolourations, etc... You don't have to run it all the time.

True, but like I said, not necessary. If your water is nice and clear and you haven't medicated then you don't need carbon.

It's chemical filtration: it will take out any color, meds, tannins, odors, etc. in your tank.

I use it to take colors out of tank....which rarely happens anyways.
