Just wondering where would be best to put carbon in a canister filter bottom or top? I was told its best to put at top so the stuff on bottom can work better with building bacteria but then I bought some carbon today and it says best spot for carbon is the bottom. Which would u say?

I dont' use carbon, but if I did, I would put it at the top of the filter . . . I would want it to be the last thing my water went thru, so that it could give a final polishing . . . if you put it at the bottom of the canister, it will be gunked up with debris, for no good reason . . .

In my FX5, I have it in the bottom tray, in my XP4, it's in the second or third tray, and in my Cascade 500, its in the bottom tray. It just depends on what other media you are using with it, where the other media is located, and which direction the water flows in the filter. I always prefer the carbon to be one of the last things the water goes through in the filter, that way it doesn't get filled up with waste material, but I usually don't put it in the very last tray, unless I have to, because I prefer to have a fine polishing pad as the final media to take out any debris that made it past the other filter pads.

I say best place for carbon placement is, on the shelf at the pet store, or inside the 2nd and 3rd chamber of a drip system filter.
