Hi,

I was wondering if I could breed cardinals in the following conditions

1. 65 gallon
2. planted with drift wood (but barebottom)
3. Many caves (I have smal l066 plecos, which grow to a maximum of 10cm)
4. Crystal Red/Black Shrimp (yet to come)

Thanks

The shrimp will eat the eggs................Bare bottom is best because of the eggs' potential to fall through gravel............I would use a spawning mop in the tank to catch the eggs.................

Hi mate, thank you for the reply. I do not know if cardinals breed in tanks though? And will my plecos eat the eggs also? I have baby Tiger King Plecos

Plecos will definitely eat the eggs. In regards to cardinals being bred.... No clue. I know neons have been bread but a cardinal.... That no clue

I've read that they'll bred with a lot of water changes, 15% a day, a little drop on ph, little light and livefood, preferably brine shrimp and some daphnia.

They tend to breed in very soft water, what is your pH and conductivity?
And as stated above, there should not be any other inhabitants in the tank if you want the eggs and fry to survive.

Not the easiest to breed. Most of these fish are wild cought and should be conditioned with daphnia, blood worms and sprulin brine shrimp. The water should have a Ph of about 5.5 no higher than 6, gh less than 13. Some tannins in the water or black water extract/peat filtered will help too. A well aged sponge filter dim lighting and java moss on the floor of the tank round out the set up. Keep the water very clean temp of about 86F and nitrates as low as possibile no higher than 10ppm lower is better. Once the eggs are dropped remove the parents as they will eat the fry there is no parental care with tetras. The fry will feed off the microscopic life in the java moss and you can feed infusuria then micro worms and such, newly hatched brine is too big for them for a while. this is and cool project but not easy. A 20 gallon long is a good size for this. Use at least a dozen fish. Good luck.
