well i went out netting today and only fish i could get that were legal were some tilapia.. i believe they are blue tilapia or Oreochromis aureus for you scientific people.. i need to know some more info on how i can care for these correctly.. i have them with some warmouth right now..

these fish arent natives this should be in the cichlids section. keep at them at any temp[ within 72-79 and feed frozen blood worms and pellets

yeah after a little research i realized these are actually cichlids if a mod could move this to the right section that would be cool

honestly they will eat anything BUT algae is the best thing for growth and for color.. they will filter algae from green water, scape it from rocks,, and will eat hair algae, clado, any al;gae better than any fish you hav e seen... I seel them to cattle farmers to put a couple in water troughs for the cattle cause they will keep the water clear and algae free all summer long... amazingly efficient...

they are very hardy and willing eater, about their being legal, tilapias are prohibited in FL, although you can even get them at LFS occassionally as small Oreochromis do come in with feeder guppies occassionally

Talapia, like tons of other invasives, have become natives in Florida, Its like other nationalities coming to the USA, if youre born here its automatic citizenship.......Hmmmmm :(

Does it look like mine? Ignore the baby pacu in the pic.

This is an off spring of some of my first tilapia. He is a hybird, but is partially Oreochromis aureus. He has been living just find and dandy off of cichlid pellets, algae wafers and zucchini. He LOVES zucchini and cucumbers. I think I have 5 or 6 varietites of cichlid food I rotate him through. They are omnivorous, and do really well with small fish the tank. Don't put him in with something big though.

This tilapia lives all sorts of happy with danios, but tried to eat a 14" pacu. Go figure.

I believe you have to have a permit to keep telapia in FL..

Why would that be Camshaft??? to make sure you dont release any to the wild ???
