I'm waiting to get a shoal of baby caribes but no one is selling them now and no one knows when they'll be available. One of the vendor here may still have some piraya in stock so I'm thinking should I get a shoal of pirayas instead? how different between caribes and pirayas other than size and coloration? I've read somewhere saying caribes are usually more agressive and some info says pirayas are the most aggressive in they pygo family. anyone had both and what's your experience with them?

I know some will say it all comes down to the individual fish (that is true) but I want to know which one is more agressive and the less skittish on average.

Also thought about a mix shoal of caribes and piraya but I don't have an additional grow out tank available so if I can't get them at the same time then mix shoal is out of question unless I can find similar size when the time comes.

the tank I'll be keep them in is 44"x45"x20", how many caribes and/or piraya I can keep in there for life? for filtration I have one FX5 for mechanical filtration mainly (no bio media) and the outlet goes to a 7"x30"x20" sump with ~160 pot scrubbies for bio filtration. have some live plants and two decent size driftwood. I'll see if I can post some picture of the tank when I get home tonight.

any suggestion/comment is welcomed.

bump, no one had experience with both pygos?
if you have only one of those two you can also post your experience with it. some pictures of the fish would be nice too.

i have a shoal of piraya... they are awesome.
you will need a little bigger tank for piraya when they get bigger. like in a 180 i would not put more than 5. they are def. the most impressive shoal.

Mix them both. They are both gorgeous!

are they skittish at all? I was thinking may 3 to 5 the most too.
do you have any recent picture of your piraya or maybe a whole tank shot? as for color I see most pirayas are either yellow or organe, are there also red?

Gotta go with piraya!

Buddy has a tank with 50 caribe in it---It sure is damn impressive to see amd watch...

I have had a shoals of piraya as well....Still prefer these caribe..

What size are the caribes and what size tank he has? must be a HUGE tank if he's going to keep all 50 in there for life.

Do you see any issue to house 12 caribes in my tank for life? probably better with 8 but "I have a dozen caribes" just sounds much better. :naughty:

should I add more filtration? or that'll be enough?

Rule of thumb would be 20 gal for every pygo......But I tend to go with over stocked tanks-
I dont know your knowledge on Piranha so I wont recommend an overstocked tank for you----

IMO-
Piraya seems to cannibilize eachother alot more than Caribe-Caribe seem to fin nip and such alot more though...

Either would look impressive-I seem to like tanks more with one species instead of mixed-But that all certainl personal preference....

Filtration seems fine if went with recomended piranha for space given..Piraya can get huge-Alot bigger than caribe can..Just take forever to grow them up.
