The visible part of the tooth is the crown. The outer covering of the tooth is called enamel. The rest of the tooth is hidden below the gum line and is called the root. The outer portion of the root is hard. This is called dentin. The inner portion or the “root canal” contains a pulp which is soft. This consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue.

When enamel and dentin coat of the tooth is damaged, the tooth nerve becomes unprotected from external influences and this condition is very painful for the patient. The pain is caused because of the pressure of fluids building up inside the pulp chamber or root canal.

Pulpitis is caused by an inflammation of the pulp inside the tooth. It is usually the result of either dental caries or tooth decay or dental injury. Dental caries occurs as a result of poor dental hygiene. Pulpitis can affect milk teeth and permanent teeth.

Caries is caused mostly in children because the bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and starch that we consume. They produce an acid that leads to tooth decay. This can in turn lead to an infection of the pulp and sometimes the gums.

Symptoms of Pulpitis is severe pain in the tooth usually during the night.

Mild inflammation may not damage the tooth permanently. Severe inflammation may cause the pulp to die. The treatment of pulpitis might involve several visits to the dental clinic. The dentist may remove the nerve and to put a composite filling in place.

The pupitis can be avoided through proper oral hygiene which will protect from caries complications turning it into pulpitis

The outer layer of the crown is enamel. The outer layer of the root is cementum, which is thin and soft. Cementum can easily be damaged by improper brushing, resulting in cuts or grooves in the root at the gum line. This condition is called toothbrush abrasion. When cementum has been gouged away with a toothbrush, dentin is exposed, which can be very sensitive.

Teeth are very susceptible to caries when they first errupt. There are two types of dental caries: pit and fissure caries and smooth surface caries which involve the sides of the tooth. Pit and fissure caries can be prevented with a sealant placed over the pits and grooves of the crown. Fluoride treatment makes the enamel harder and less suceptible to smooth surface caries.

Good plaque control brushing and flossing is necessary to have healthy gums and teeth.

This is really random but very informative. Odd first post.
