ok I got a baby Red Ear Slider yesterday. He's a little bigger than a quarter. The man said he was a year old.I doubt it.Right now I have him in a 10 gallon with about a inch or 2 of water,a submegiable heater,a log, rocks piled on one side so he can get out,and the light from a previous fish tank.I sloughed(took down) all but 1 of my fish tanks.I still have 2 10 gallons,a 20 gallon, and my 55 to move him into when he grows up some.I've had a almost full grow RES but never a baby except when i was small they died though. What should I do to keep this one alive?I know they need UVB lights i'm working on getting one.Right now i'm just taking him outside with me to bask in the sun inside a carrier.I haven't seen him eat yet.He doesn't seem to like the pellets. How can i get him to eat.I would hate for him to die of starvation.Any ideas or tips?I'm going nuts i don't want him to die from i want to keep him a long time.I know that they live about 50 years.HELP!!!!!!!!!:nilly:

he might take bloodworms, or you could tred prekilled feeder guppies
Bloodworms yes, feeder guppies no, ther is to much of a risck with disease transmicion. As for your new baby turtle:D I recomend this.Increase your water level a bit to about 10cm. Baby red ear sliders if healty dont have problems swiming at all. you sould also get rid of that rock pile because it can fall and hurt your turtle. Get large peaces of cork, wich work great for bascking plataform and some plastic plants wich can be left floating and work great as a resting place or even some cheap real ones like Elodea wich also makes a fine snak. You do need UV ligth , because with small babies like this is dificult to get them to acept foodstuffs with vit D3 in it. Get a good ligth like those 5.0 ligths of Zoomed. Make shure there is nothing in beetuwen your turtle and the ligth bulb (like glass, plastic ,etc). If you are going to take your turtle outside, I recomend that you make him a small outdoor habitat similar to your tank. I do that myself with those big plastic or ruber recepients found on hardwere stores. Make shure you take her outside only on sunny and warm late mornings and afternons. Keep a eye on her from far so that you dont disturb her while she is bascking. Make shure both shade and direct sun are avaible and also furnish with cork ,small logs, water plants like duckweed and elodea, etc. Aim for about 15 cm of water. As for food try stuff like:bloodworms, daphnia, artemia, tubifex(all avaiable frozen on pet shops),pinhead crickets, grounded chicken that can be mixed with a good brand suplement like reptivite, tetra reptomin(that you can smash into a powder and mix with chicken), small pieces of fish fillet, shrimp meat, and even small peaces of darck feafy vegetebles like water cress and mustard greens (but dont be surprised if she just ignores them). As for the seller saing that your turtle is 1 year old, unless you got on your hands a badly undernourist and stuned turtle, I belive it is just desinformation;). Hope it helps:)

if its not eating, its because you keep takin git out of his new home and putting him outside. you are not giving him time to acclimate. get your uv strip light and get a small 50 watt basking spot bulb. watter should be 77-82. basking spot should be 90-95. reptomin, anachris, dried shrimp pellets, earthworms, small crickets.....and what the others said for food. definately get deeper water. 4 to 5 inches. have the water come up to the edge of the basking platform so he can get on and off easily. quit moving him around!!!! no more outside til he has settled in his new home and is eating.

I have two babies right now. A map and a cooter. They live in an upside down cake thing. They eat reptomin. I have a uvb bulb for them. They beg as soon as they see me. I have several large turtles in a pond that were that size a few years ago...Sliders get large.

i didnt know that fish can transmi disease to turtles:eek:
but now i do thanks

Unless there is some specific fish to turtle disease i am unaware of...its the same deal as feeding live fish to larger fish. If you are quarantining them there should be no problem.
Very small live prey items may be necessary to start off animals like this.

I said that because most feeders you get from a shop are really ticking time bombs and tend to be ill one way or another. Treating them tends to be futile and the medication can hurt the animal that eats the feeder. If you have an animal that realy needs life feeders the best aproach is to breed easy species (convicts, tilapia, gambusias, etc) your self. Has for disease transmicion between turts and fish, its real and has killed it´s cher of snakenecks, matamatas, softies, etc. The most problematic are bacterial infections folowed by fungus and protists. For a baby res there is no need to take chances whit feeders simply because there are so many other healty food items ;)

I see, but quarantining feeders is a very common practice, especially on this forum where the majority of (fish) keepers feed live food to preds.

I understend but in this case you can avoid it:D Unfornatly whit some species like matamatas ther´s simply not many alternatives:(
