I prefer freshwater.....coz easier to maintain....while saltwater tank, you will need to take care of so many things like kh, ph, nitrate, ammonia, salinity, etc....

I think the answer to this question depends on what kind of fish you like. There a lot of ancient and interesting predators for freshwater (ie. arowanas, polypterus sp., knives, gars, rays, etc.) but saltwater surely tops freshwater when it comes to colors (with just a couple of groupers and triggers, I think I could capture nearly every color of the rainbow).

It is true that saltwater tanks require a higher level of dedication to water quality parameters, but even large freshwater tanks with messy predators are going to require a lot of work.

All that being said, all my tanks are currently freshwater, although I once had a *****in' saltwater predator tank with several groupers, a blue spotted stingray and a horn shark. That tank rocked. Never should have got rid of that setup, no matter how much it cost to keep everything fed.

Whats better salt water or fresh water?
Bourbon.... just kidding.
I am a fan of fresh water tanks, mainly because of easier maintainence and cheaper fish.
I really don't think that one is better than the other but you need deeper pockets to keep a prime salt set up going.

In my experience the more $$$ you spend on a critter dooms it to die in direct proportion. So, freshwater.
Also, I think that while I serve the tank- feeding time, water changes, testing, those little chores we do- the tank should serve me in many more ways. You know what I mean: gazing at your Happy Tank, watching the fish eating... You should get many more hours of enjoyment out of it than what you put into it.
I will NOT be a slave to a saltwater tank. ("Amen").
I will NOT have my life revolve around testing, monitoring, adjusting... worrying. ("Halleluhiah").
I will NOT go broke providing expensive lighting to keep a rock alive or whatever. (Faint).
And, to conclude, it is better to have a large source of fresh water in your house in case of emergency. ;)

(BTW, I burn with envy when I gaze upon those gorgeous Marine aquariums...).

Freshwater is much easier to maintain.

Saltwater is fun for a challenge and for the greater variety of species.
