Carnivorous pleco feeding question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My L-24 and 25 will not touch veggies at all. Never kept any omnivores or herbivores with them though. Royals cannot digest protein espicially animal protein well so I would watch when you feed them.

Thanks Allan. I keep a good eye on them for sure. I decided to put the royal in with the big L-114 rather than any of my other plecos becuase the others are more carnivorous also and all still under 5". I was afraid that they would compete for food, creating conflict. The royal on the other hand just goes after the veggies and leaves most of the meatier foods and the L-114 alone. BTW, I would love to see some pics of your plecos! I cannot even tell you how jealous I am of you having both an L-24 AND L-25!

Hey winggate, where did u get the clownfish clip,
that clip is a good idea, easy way to feed and remove the leftovers.

interesting way to hold down the veggie ... with a sucking cup!!! gotta try that ^^

I was just gonna say the same exact thing.. I just got a huge 7" chocolate pleco and am thinking about a Royal pleco too.. The algae wafers are actually pretty pricy... i think i'll stick to veggie instead...

BTW.. sorry for the derail nice pleco!~ :headbang2

I have a few of them that I picked up from my lfs and Petco. Dr Foster & Smith also carries them. I get my algae wafers from F&S also. $10 for 8.8 ounces of Hikari wafers, a LOT cheaper than my lfs.

I 'am kinda in the dinosaur age when it comes to pics. I'll see what I can do though. Really like my L-24 and 25. Impossible to find now. Jusr

Sorry was going to say L-114 is a pseudacanthicas also as the L-24 and 25 and a carnivore. I once had an L-114 that tore the hell out of my L-25. L-114 are some beutiful but take no prisoners plecos. Sold him back and miss him now though, good luck with your royal.

Yeah the L-114's are the meanest pleco I've owned. I myself am a little surprised that the royal and him are getting along so well. There really is no serious aggression from the L-114 toward the royal at this point. But he is not a fan of the gravel siphon by any means lol. I'm not sure but I think the royal is small enough to where the L-114 does'nt see him as a threat and the royal is smart enough to get out of the L-114's way. With all this said, I still would'nt suggest this mix of plecos unless you spend a lot of time observing the tank at night(lunar lights) and during feeding and have a way to keep the royal from the protien based foods.

Do the larger carnivore plecos poo more than the omnivore/herbivore varieties? Common sense tells me yes...but maybe the herbivore diets cause the constant pooing? I don't know...looking to get a large-type pleco that is not very aggressive, has decent colors, and affordable...
