I know you want to feed mainly veggies to the omnivorous plecos with very little protien. I have a 4.5" royal with an 11" L-114. I decided to put the Royal in with the L-114 because I thought I could feed the royal his veggies on the glass and the L-114 his "meat" on the ground because the royal will always go for the veggies before anything else.
Good theory right?

So my question is: Should you try to keep veggies away from carnivorous plecos? Is it OK for them to have veggies on a regular basis?

Carnivorous plecos will eat vegetables just fine. No issues with that. It's the reverse that you should look out for.

Thanks Lupin. I did'nt think it would be an issue but I thought I would ask because you always here about the diet of omnivorous plecos and not much regarding the carnivorous types. Thanks again.

interesting way to hold down the veggie ... with a sucking cup!!! gotta try that ^^

What would be the problem with an omnivourous getting protein. What happens or what does it cause?

Some protien is acceptable. In fact(some may not agree) I try to feed even my omnivores a little protien. But they are designed to thrive on mostly veggies. I believe the results of too much protien in an omnivorous pleco would result in improper growth rate and shortened life span but hopefully someone else will chime in with a better explanation than I gave. Also keep in mind some omnivores needs change as they grow (from what I have read), commons for example take mainly a veggie diet when they are young and actually start to need more protien as they mature. BTW thank you for the comments on my pics!

Works great! I know you got some psuedacanthicus also. Mine were'nt interested in the veggies on the glass until they learned to eat it on the ground first.

Hey Ben. the big guy was eating veggies for me too. and he was feed veggie only in the store I got him from. it's cool. but I was told to watch your veggie plecos with meat. Royals are opertunistic eaters. I was going to try a multi species tank when I had the big guy. but I was told not to for fear of them eating the wrong things. I'll try to dig up that thread.

Thanks for the info bro. I am not to worried about the Royal at this point because I get the Royal on the glass first then throw in the meatier foods for the L-114 and the royal is too involved to go down and try to fight off that big SOB! And by the time the Royal gets done the big guy has sucked down his dinner too. With that being said I may run into issues later on when the royal is bigger and ballsier but I dont plan on keeping him in there permanantly. I also have another tank on hand in case things get out of hand between the two. I figured you must have kept veggies in his diet because it did'nt take ANY work to get him on them. He is the biggest garbage can of a pleco I have ever owned!
