Me and a friend fished the drying up Lake Jackson saturday afternoon. We were drifting across a shallow(2ft) grass area and I was throwing a gold spoon for bass and on about my third cast I hooked a nice fish, got it to the boat and it was a 5-6 pound grass carp hooked in the mouth with the gold spoon....was this just a fluke or do carp sometimes hit lures? I 'll have a pick up hopefully tonight when my friend that was with me emails it to me. I didnt think carp hit lures so I was real surprised to see it hooked in the mouth.

They must be getting hungry! Carp are opportunity feeders. They have their normal diet but when something small and "edible" goes right in front of them they'll try to take it. That's prob what happened. Not the usual but it happens.

In holland it occurs that carp attack lures in their breedingseason for territorial reasons,it is the carpbreeding season.

Ive had Grass Carp slam a piece of bread just as soon as it hit the water, sort of like some bass to like a reaction strike. If the lure/bait is right in front of them, I can see them taking it. Ive never done it with a lure, besides maybe a floating fly.

caught a 4 footer on a tiny grasshopper crankbait when i was a kid
